There's a lady in my neighbor who takes a walk every day. Nothing odd about that, you might think. This lady is probably in her late eighties or maybe ninety years old. She uses a walker, and walks much faster than you would expect.

Still not too odd, but a bit unusual, you say. However the lady is accompanied on her rounds with her two cats.

The cats are beautiful, white with small multi color spots. I believe they are related due to size and coloring. These kitties are so well behaved, you might mistake them for dogs. I have watched them several times and each time they amused me with their antics. One cat always stays at the side of their mistress.

The other kitty, who is missing half a tail, runs ahead about ten or twelve feet and stops and waits for the lady and her cat to catch up and pass them. Then the stub tailed cat runs to overtake them and he takes his turn walking with their mistress while the other long tailed one runs ahead and waits.

They proceed in this manner around the block and out of my view. They never move more than a few inches from their mistress, each taking a turn walking with her the entire length of her walk. Passing cars or other walkers do not spook them.

I commented to her one day that she had trained her cats well. She answered she had never trained them. Their routine was worked out and executed by the cats themselves. They take turns getting in a bit of exercise and watching over their loved one at the same time. Clever cats!

About Cats & Teenagers:

If you have or have had teenagers, you may want to know why they really have a lot in common with cats:

  1. Neither teenagers nor cats turn their heads when you call them by name.
  2. No matter what you do for them, it is not enough. Indeed, all humane efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot.
  3. You rarely see a cat walking outside of the house with an adult human being, and it can be safely said that no teenager in his or her right mind wants to be seen in public with his or her parents.
  4. Cats and teenagers can lie on the living room sofa for hours on end without moving, barely breathing.
  5. Cats have nine lives. Teenagers carry on as if they did.
