Some years back two ladies dedicated themselves to trapping, neutering, spaying, and inoculating the wild cats (descendants of dumped cats!) of the jetty. They, and other people, built small replicas of houses for the cats to live in and be fed in. The houses were also to provide shelter for the wild cats but when the ferocious winds blow in from the ocean I think the cats find more shelter in the huge boulders that comprise the jetty. Bella is a very special little cat and my dedicated companion. I have had many cats thru the years, but Bella truly is one in a million. Meralyn Ard

Cat to the rescue!

Bella was a Jetty Cat. She was born wild in the jetty on the Rogue River across from Gold Beach, Oregon.
Bella was trapped when she was very young, about 12 weeks, and unfortunately spayed shortly thereafter. It was way too much trauma for a small kitten (she looked younger than 12 weeks), and she never got over the shock especially since her incision did not heal properly and she had to go back in for another operation! Bella has stayed on the wild side a little and is not happy if she cannot go outside, but she usually comes back in at night. I have encouraged her to do so, rewarding her with kitty treats when she does.
Some cats will retrieve small objects, like little balls or bits of paper and Bella is one of these entertaining little felines. She would retrieve until I was worn out when a kitten but rarely does it now, I think she believes it is beneath her. She is approximately five years of age now.
